RECORD NUMBER OF EMIRATES’ STUDENTS WANT TO VISIT DUNDEE

DUNDEE is becoming an increasingly popular destination for female students from the United Arab Emirates.
The city’s Al-Maktoum Institute reports that more students than ever before applied to make the 18-day trip to Scotland for its Summer School – but only 36 were selected for this year’s School, which is now under way.
“We had a record number of applications so, clearly, the value and importance of the Institute’s Summer School is highly appreciated in the Emirates and we are very pleased about that,” said Professor Malory Nye, Principal of the Institute.
Between the Summer School and the Institute’s Academic Training Programme earlier in the year, around 260 female students from the UAE have visited he city in the past six years.
The Institute estimates the twice-yearly visits represent a £200,000 boost to the local Dundee economy.
The current group, plus chaperones, come from Zayed University, UAE University, the British University in Dubai, The Higher Colleges of Technology and Abu Dhabi University.
During their time in Scotland, the third and fourth-year students will visit Dundee’s City Chambers, The Scottish Parliament, Loch Leven, Glamis Castle, The University of Aberdeen, Dundee College, Scone Palace and other places of interest.
And, of course, shopping is part of their itinerary.
“We are delighted to welcome the students to the Summer School, which is focused on learning about Scotland and in particular the history, culture, and traditions of Scotland in the contemporary world,” said Professor Nye.
“As always, we hope the students will go home as ‘ambassadors’ for Dundee and Scotland, ready to convince people in the UAE to make this a holiday destination as well as strengthening the already strong links between Dundee and Dubai.”..
