TASTE OF SCOTTISH BAKING FOR EMIRATES’ STUDENTS
A group of female students from the United Arab Emirates visited Dundee College today (Monday, July 13) for a baking demonstration.
The students are among a group of 36 taking part in a Summer School organised by the city’s Al-Maktoum Institute.
“The Summer School is focused on learning about Scotland and in particular the history, culture, and traditions of Scotland in the contemporary world,” said Professor Malory Nye, Principal of the Institute.
“We are extremely grateful to Dundee College for arranging for the students to sample Scottish baking.
“It’s the second year in a row the College has been good enough to organise this visit and, indeed, we also had a group of students here last Friday (July 10) for a similar session.
“The students thoroughly enjoy the baking.”
Dundee College lecturer chef, Walter McCrindle, a prize-winning pastry chef, demonstrated baking scones, oatcakes and, for those who like something sweet, strawberry cream-filled tarts.
“We have had similar groups attend these demonstrations in the past and they have always enjoyed joining in the process,” said Walter.
“People always get a kick out of tasting food that they have prepared themselves and having been tempted by the cakes the UAE students truly enjoyed a real taste of Scotland.”
During their 18-day stay in Scotland, the third and fourth-year students have visited Dundee’s City Chambers, The Scottish Parliament, Loch Leven, and Glamis Castle.
This week, in addition to the College, they are due to visit The University of Aberdeen and Scone Palace - and also to go shopping.
Between the Summer School and the Institute’s Academic Training Programme earlier in the year, around 260 female students from the UAE have visited the city in the past six years.
The Institute estimates the twice-yearly visits represent a £200,000 boost to the local Dundee economy.
The current group, plus chaperones, come from Zayed University, UAE University, the British University in Dubai, The Higher Colleges of Technology and Abu Dhabi University...
